PERFORMANCE BASED COMMUNICATIONS AND SURVEILLANCE (PBCS)

Course Information

Performance Based Communications and Surveillance (PBCS) is the combination of the criteria of Performance Based Communication (PBC) and Performance Based Surveillance (PBS). These terms refer to communication and surveillance based on performance specifications applied to the provision of air traffic services. Major airspaces like the North Atlantic (NAT) have become a capacity bottleneck and traffic continues to increase. New technologies and procedures including Performance Based Communication and Surveillance (PBCS) are now implemented in order to reduce the minimum lateral and longitudinal separation between aircraft, thus increasing airspace capacity. The provision of PBCS in the NAT High Level Airspace (HLA) applies RCP 240 and RSP 180 specifications to the application of 30 nm, 50 nm and 5 minute longitudinal separation minima and the application of a 23 nm lateral separation minimum.
